Hail's Impact on Your Roof

Hail can have significant effects on an asphalt shingle roof. Let’s explore these impacts:

  1. Granule Loss: Hail can cause the granular coating to wear off of asphalt shingles, making them weaker and more prone to sun damage. The granules on shingles serve multiple purposes, including adding weight, providing color, and protecting the underlying asphalt from the sun’s UV rays. When hail hits the roof, it can knock granules off the shingles, leaving the roof compromised and creating the potential for leaks.
  2. Cracks and Bruises: The impact of hail can cause cracks or bruises in the shingles. These punctures, tears, or fractures compromise the integrity of the shingle mats. Even small hail hits can create weak spots in the shingle, leading to leaks.
  3. Water Infiltration: Damaged shingles can lead to water leaks. If left unchecked, water infiltration can cause extensive interior damage.

Shingle Type Matters:

  • Three-Tab Shingles: These shingles are composed of an asphalt base mat with a fiberglass backing and a layer of granules. Three-tab shingles have the least amount of hail resistance.
  • Architectural Shingles: These shingles have a thicker base mat, stronger adhesives, and additional topside granules. While they have more hail resistance than three-tab shingles, they can still be damaged with small to medium sized hail.  
  • Impact Resistant Architectural Shingles: These shingles are made with polymer-modified asphalt and feature additional engineering and materials that can help withstand the force of impacts from hail and wind-driven debris. Class 3 impact resistant shingles are proven to withstand the impact of a 1.75-inch steel ball. Class 4 impact resistant shingles have one of the highest ratings possible and can withstand the impact of a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet.

In summary, hail damage can weaken shingles, compromise their water-shedding ability, and potentially lead to leaks. Regular inspections and timely repairs are essential to maintain the longevity of an asphalt shingle roof. 🏠🌧️
